The Elmer A. Sperry award commemorates the life and achievements of Elmer Ambrose Sperry, whose genius and perseverance contributed so much to so many types of transportation.
This award given by the Elmer A Sperry was given in recognition of a distinguished engineering contribution which, through application, proved in actual service, has advanced the art of transportation whether by land, sea or air. In 1959 this was awarded to Sir Geoffrey De Havilland, Major Frank B. Halford (in memoriam) Charles C. Walker and their co - workers in the De Havilland Aircraft Company for the first jet-powered passenger aircraft and engines. Frank Halfords' daughter, Partricia Draper, accepted the medal on behalf of the family at The Plaza Hotel New York. Unfortunately this medal, along with racing trophies of F.B. Halford were stolen from her home and nothing has ever been recovered.
